Our ethos

We believe that children learn best through self-initiated exploration of their environment which enables each individual to construct their own understanding of the world around them.

The children are encouraged to actively explore their surroundings independently and are motivated by their need to question, think, imagine, create, express and communicate. We see the role of play in learning as a central one. It is a natural point of access to the curriculum for each child at his/her particular developmental stage and level of understanding.

At the Whitehouse we aim to provide a warm, stimulating and satisfying environment which is planned for each child’s own active learning in order to capture their interests and motivate each individual to engage and begin learning.

Careful planning takes into account each child’s individual needs, informed by sensitive listening, observations and reflection by skilled practitioners. Staff support and scaffold child-initiated/spontaneous play, and because they know the children’s needs, are able to ensure that all are challenged and helped to make outstanding progress.

food and drink

All the food offered at the nursery is free from additives and artificial colourings and use organic ingredients where possible. Our meals are freshly prepared on the premises using only quality ingredients. Children who have special dietary requirements are always catered for with a close alternative.

The children have access to water throughout the day and also drink either water, milk
(or a milk substitute such as soya or oat) at meal times.
